Gold’s enduring value can be traced back in history over 6,000 years. In the beginning chapters of the Bible in Genesis 2, God declared that “the gold was good." Abraham, known as the “father of the faith” was personally blessed by God and became “rich in livestock, silver and gold.”
Some Bible scholars believe God created gold and silver as the ultimate form of money, wealth accumulation, and wealth transfer. (Read the book God’s Money by Rosioara for more.)
Gold is Money
When you consider the very definition of money as a medium of exchange, a measure of value, a measure of payment and a store of value, gold and silver have a proven record in history dating back to when King Croesus of Lydia struck the first known gold coins over 2,500 years ago.
The history of man’s creation of paper money has been quite dismal. Over 775 paper currencies have failed with an average lifespan of only 27 years. When paper money was backed by gold it was highly successful and well received in commerce locally, nationally, and internationally. Only when kingdoms and governments began to dilute the value of money through money creation or outright debasement did the currencies and coins lose their purchasing power.
For a period of 277 years, from 1635 to 1912, currencies in America which were backed by gold were a perfect store of value. Inflation was virtually non-existent, running almost zero at 0.6%.
Gold has continued to be the foremost store of value over the longer term, outperforming every other paper currency on earth since 1900.
